Caves are  unique formations on the face of Earth. They are important  as  habitats, as  reservoirs for minerals and water, and as a tourist destinations. Caves are marvelous inside and out. They belong to the people who own the land, the people who live on the land, and for those of us who cherish the land. Caves need to be conserved because they are a part of the Earth. There are many tips on how you can conserve caves as you enjoy them.

Cave conservation is the long term preservation of the cave so that it will be there for generations. There are many societies that care for the conservation of caves like the National Speleological Society (NSS). You should always follow cave laws or rules when caving. Before going into a cave, always ask permission to go inside. When inside a cave, try not to touch any cave formations. Some formations take years for nature to build and others are very fragile like sea coral. If you touch a formation, make sure you're not wearing muddy gloves or boots. The mud could then become embedded in the cave formations. Don't touch the fragile formations because they would break easily. When caving always stay on the established trail(s). Following established trails will help preserve the formations. If you cannot find your way back using the established trail(s), follow another trail, but avoid breaking or touching formations. Try not to leave any footprints when walking on the established trail(s). Another way to conserve caves is to not to write or mark on the cave walls or surfaces. You should also always pick up food, trash, and human waste. And do not disturb the cave animals.  When taking pictures, do not take pictures of the animals. The  flash of the camera will upset them. Some caves  may let you take pictures, but you need to be sensitive to those who call the caves home. This all helps conserve the cave so it can be used for years to come.   Remember the NSS motto "Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but pictures, kill nothing but time."(and keep those footprints on the established trails!).
