In a town called Chartres 50 miles outside of Paris stands the Chartres Cathedral. The Chartres Cathedral was built with a lot of enthusiasm and is an example of a creation that is more recognized than its creator. From the struggle to carry heavy carts of full of stone and wood to the struggle of rebuilding the cathedral(five times)the Chartres Cathedral has an amazing history. Originally reported
to have been a site for Druid worship centuries before Christ, Chartres
cathedral is now considered by some to be the best example of Gothic architecture
in the world. The cathedral was the center of life for the town. During
the Middle Ages the church was the marketplace, civic center
and place of pilgrimage. Four large fairs were held by the
church in Chartres which was said to have the tunic of the Virgin Mary. The
town was well known for this and many came to these events. Before the
existing cathedral was built, the crypt of the original building
had served as a medieval hospital. By the high middle ages, cathedrals
were one of the most important centers of learning. These churches were
a visual lesson and taught the values held by the christian faith. An important
seat of learning, this cathedral was used as a school. This school taught
among other things, mathematics and music. Mathematics was considered a
link to understand the infinite. Thierry of Chartres used geometry to explain
Christianity. For example,he explained the equilateral triangle stood for the Trinity.
The Chartres Cathedral is also known for having the best classical
medieval labyrinth. A labyrinth is a single path that goes around in concentric
circles. They were very popular during this time. It was built into the
floor around the 1200's. Chartres cathedral played an important part in
the life of the people during the middle ages and still does today.
