Chartres Cathedral is located in Chartres, France, outside of Paris. With a history that spans centuries, the cathedral still inspires people today with its ancient designs and classic Gothic architecture. It was begun in 1145. People dragged carts of stone to the building site for the workmen to use.
In 1194  the cathedral burned down. The part that remained is called Early Gothic. Rebuilt between 1194 and 1220, the rest is an example of a French Gothic. During the Crusades, the faithful still flocked to the cathedral said to house a tunic worn by the blessed Virgin Mary. A very important pilgrimage site, Chartres Cathedral was left standing unlooted during the French Revolution. At one time used as a hospital, it is now a well known tourist destination and a place of worship.
