Seventy-two years ago Frank Lloyd Wright built one of his most enduring
buildings called Fallingwater. Located in Mill Run, Pennsylvania, Fallingwater
has been visited by over four million people! It is an example of the world
renowned International style. The house was built on an active waterfall.
This house captures Wright's passion for nature. Built as a residence
for
the Kaufmann family, the house appears to be floating in the air above
the waterfall. The expanse of the windows and balconies embrace
the surrounding forest. The house is cantilevered over the waterfall
which gives it that floating effect. It is an expansion of Wright's attempt
to bring nature into his art. Actually, Fallingwater was an idea longer
than an actual plan. His sketches for the Kaufmanns were done the morning
of Mr. Kaufmann's arrival to look over Wright's work. The building was
constructed
with
little
alteration to his original design. Not bad for a morning's
work! One more thing about Fallingwater is that the name of the waterfall
that is underneath the house is Bear Run.
