Jorn Utzon is the architect of the Sydney Opera House. He was born on April 9,1918 in Copenhagen ,
Denmark. He studied at the Academy of Arts in Copenhagen. He used to be
an engineer, but unexpectedly won a competition for a new opera
house in Australia in the Sydney Harbor. It was under construction in 1957-1973.
It was a very difficult to build the Sydney Opera House because of its
overlapping roofs. Some engineers thought of destroying it but,
Utzon did not want something very important to him destroyed. The engineers
obeyed him and tried their best to finish it. It was hard for the
engineers because the new opera house had overlapping roofs. It took sixteen
years to finish building the new opera house! When they were done Jorn
Utzon called it the Sydney Opera House. It turned out to be a success for
Jorn Utzon, the engineers and for Sydney. This is the first building Jorn
Utzon had designed. It was a very hard journey but there is a unique and
striking building to show for the effort. Jorn Utzon is still alive today.
His building looks like a sculpture and he credits Frank Llyod Wright as
an influence. It is a very sad fact but, Jorn Utzon, at the time of this
writing, has never entered the Sydney Opera House.
