The Sydney Opera House is a unique piece of architecture. The architect is Jorn Utzon. It was built from 1957-1973 in the Sydney Harbor in Australia . The Sydney Opera House is used for performances such as ballet, opera, musical concerts and more. The architectural style is Expressionist Modern. It has overlapping roofs and reminds people of sails on a sail boat. Engineers found it very difficult to build the Sydney Opera House. The roof of this building was built with over 1,000,000 pieces of fungus-resistent ceramic tiles and solid concrete. It was the first roof of this kind. However it has come to represent a cultural symbol for Australia and for the modern world. It cost a lot more than they thought and took fourteen years, but this special piece of architecture is known today throughout the world.
