I know it may seem early, but we wanted to send out a refresher on how to add tasks to the grade book so you weren't caught off guard. I have created a video to walk you through the process of creating an assignment for the semester to add grades. The rest of the end of semester process like adding comments and posting grades will be coming at a later time, once we receive it. All support staff should have grades in BEFORE leaving for winter break. Please make sure you check to see that ALL students in your classes are on your roll in the appropriate section.
Do you like mysteries and problem solving? Do you want your kids to persist through challenges and use critical thinking skills? If so then Breakout EDU if for you. I have a Breakout Thanksgiving game that I would be glad to do with your kids but I am only here tomorrow (Wednesday). Let me know if you want me to come. It will take about 40 - 45 minutes and involves reading, math, map coordinates and more. We can help those that don't have all the prerequisite skills:-). We can do winter ones after Thanksgiving:-)
Are you constantly second guessing your self when writing if you have the grammar correct? Are you in graduate school and need an "editor" for your papers? Well, grammarly may be able to help. You can install the chrome extension so it will work in your web browser or you can download the add-on for MS Office on your home computer (it hasn't been approved by GCPS for install on work computers). Once the extension or add-on is installed you can have an extensive grammar check of your writing! Yes, there is a pay version if you need to check for plagiarism etc, but the free version works great.
For those of you that like to plan ahead, the DA schedule has been update to the computer schedule. Please look carefully and let RUSS LAPLUME know if there is a conflict. If you will not be using your time because you are doing them in the classroom etc, please let me know so I can remove your name and make the time available for someone else.
There will be another great learning activity in eClass for our students during Thanksgiving break. Please encourage your students to participate to get them more comfortable with using the eClass C & I tool, especially from home. It would be great to provide an incentive for those that participate.
Osmo has a new game out, Pizza Co. The students make pizzas according to the orders of the customers in the pizza shop, then give the appropriate change to the customer. I did it with some 3rd graders today, and they loved it, but it made them think. Making change is always a challenge for kids so this is great practice. Here is a link to the website for more information. I have my personal copy, but the school doesn't have any at this point. If you would like for me to come during one of your small group times and work with some kids, just let me know. You may also be interested in Monster which is a drawing app. The Monster tells the kids what to draw and then that drawing comes into the story on the iPad. Again, I have a personal copy if you want to see it.
Some of you have your own personal accounts with Google, and some just have the school (@lilburnes.org) account. Did you know that you can store ANY file type in Google Drive just to have a back up? Did you know that there is a small application that can be loaded on your computer that syncs all files in that folder to Google Drive in the cloud and vice versa? This is a great way to back up your files and make sure you never lose them and that you have access to them no matter where you go. (It is my lifesaver for graduate school.) Regular Google Accounts give you 10 GB of storage for free and up to 100 GB for just $1.99/mo. The EDUCATION account however, doesn't have a limit! So, no more need to worry about all those work files disappearing with a crashed hard drive etc. Put them in the cloud!
Hour of Code is December 5 - 11. This is a great time to do something different to introduce the kids to computer programming on the most basic of levels. We will be sending out more information in a separate e-mail, but please consider participating for 1 hour during those dates. Our goal is to have 100% participation during the week! We will be sending options for Off-line activities you can even do in your classroom. You can sign up to say you are participating and receive some freebies while supplies last.
